The power of makeup is undeniable; our favourite products assist us in creating the beauty looks we desire, enhancing our favourite features, and encapsulating our personal definitions of beauty. The best makeup routines empower the modern woman to face the world with confidence, no matter what the day has in store.
When it comes to makeup, a skilful application can make or break the look. Applying your favourite products correctly and using the appropriate amount of makeup can help you achieve the beauty look you desire.
Let’s take a look at some important dos and don’ts.
Products
When you’re new to makeup, the last thing you need to do is go out and buy a bunch of different products. It’s very easy to overspend on makeup and then be dissatisfied with everything you’ve bought.
Instead of purchasing everything from eyelash primer to finishing spray, begin with the essentials.
Dos | Don’ts |
Buy as many products as you need | A big no to buying too many products at once |
Face
Applying makeup to a dirty face invites serious skin problems in the future. Breakouts and acne may not appear until much later. Never apply makeup on top of makeup that has been sitting on your face for hours. Lipstick is the one exception to this rule. You can reapply lipstick or gloss as needed. However, before applying foundation or powder, make sure to remove what you’re currently wearing and allow your pores to breathe.
Dos | Don’ts |
Clean your face or wash your face | Do not apply makeup to your unclean face. |
Moisturise your face with a primer/moisturiser | Do not skip moisturising your face |
Use clean brushes to apply your makeup | Do not ever use unclean brushes which may cause skin problems. |
Concealer
Unless you’re using a powder foundation, always apply your foundation first. Applying foundation first helps to create an even base, which helps to reduce overall redness, discoloration, and minor blemishes. If you apply concealer first, you may end up wiping some off when you apply foundation or using far too much product, resulting in a heavy, cakey look. To begin, after priming your skin, apply a sheer layer of foundation all over your face, including around the eyes. This will enable you to use less concealer in the future. After your foundation has settled, use concealer to conceal any remaining areas (such as acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and under-eye circles).
Dos | Don’ts |
Apply it after the foundation for it to blend well. | Do not apply it before foundation as your skin tone will vary |
Eyebrows
The brows are an important part of your face that is frequently overlooked. When done correctly and intentionally, your brows will frame your face perfectly. Fill in your brows if you have the time (or make the time if you don’t). Fill in the sparse areas of your brows with a matte eyeshadow. But don’t go too dark! It can have an unfavourable cartoon villain effect. Choose a subtle colour that is the same as or slightly lighter than your brows. If you have very light blonde brows, you can go darker to define them more.
Dos | Don’ts |
Fill in your brows | Don’t draw dramatic or fake brows |
Lipstick
Matte lipsticks have a tendency to dry out when applied, increasing the likelihood of lip lines and chapped skin. One way to avoid this is to moisturise your lips thoroughly and exfoliate any dry skin with a lip scrub. This will create a smooth and soft canvas for applying lipstick. Not only will this improve the appearance of your lipstick, but it will also keep your lips from feeling dry throughout the day.
Dos | Don’ts |
Exfoliate your lips and moisturise them | Do not apply matte lipstick without moisturising your lips |
Mascara
Pumping the mascara wand is a popular trick for getting more mascara out of the container. However, it is a bad idea in general. Pumping your mascara wand adds more bacteria to the mascara container. It also causes the mascara to dry out more quickly. To make matters worse, it may result in clumpy application. Instead, if you want more mascara on your wand, gently swirl the wand in the container first. Remember that mascara has a three-month shelf life.
Dos | Don’ts |
Coat all of your lashes and curl them | Do not pump the mascara brush |
Last but not the least,
Never sleep with your makeup on. Always wipe off the makeup before you go off to bed.
